What is an aircon regas?

Refill. Refresh. Recool.

A car aircon regas is the process of removing the old refrigerant from your vehicle's air conditioning system and refilling it with the exact amount and type of new refrigerant the manufacturer specifies.

Over time, refrigerant escapes even from a healthy system — about 10-15% per year through seals, hoses and o-rings. After 2-3 years your aircon is running underweight, which means less cooling, harder work for the compressor, and a shorter compressor lifespan.

A proper regas restores the system to factory spec. A bad one just shoves gas into a leaking system. We do it the first way.

Symptoms

Signs Your Aircon Needs a Regas

If you notice any of these, your system is almost certainly low on refrigerant.

Warm or Weak Air

The aircon turns on but the air is only slightly cool, or it cools at idle but warms up when you drive.

Takes Too Long

The cabin takes 10+ minutes to cool down where it used to take 2-3 minutes.

Clicking Compressor

You hear the compressor clutch cycling on-and-off repeatedly — a classic low-gas symptom.

Damp / Musty Smell

Often a sign of moisture in the system, which a vacuum-and-regas removes.

Visible Oil Around Pipes

Refrigerant carries PAG oil — oily residue on aircon pipes usually means a slow leak.

Last Regas Was 2+ Years Ago

Even with no other symptoms, a system due for service is using more compressor energy than it should.

Refrigerant Types

R134a or R1234yf?

We handle both. The two gases are NOT interchangeable — putting the wrong gas in a system damages the compressor.

Aircon Regas FAQ

Everything You Need to Know

For most vehicles using R134a refrigerant, a regas starts from R650 and typically falls in the R750-R950 range depending on the size of the system. R1234yf (used in most cars from 2017 onwards, hybrids and EVs) costs more — usually R1,400-R1,900 — because the gas itself is significantly more expensive. We always quote upfront after identifying your gas type.

A complete regas takes 45 to 75 minutes. This includes recovering any remaining old gas, pulling a deep vacuum for 15-20 minutes to test for leaks, refilling with the correct OEM weight of refrigerant, adding fresh PAG oil if needed, and confirming vent temperature before you leave. Same-day service in almost every case.

It is not just refilling gas. The full service includes: identification of the correct refrigerant (R134a or R1234yf), recovery of old gas, a vacuum pull to test for leaks, refill to the OEM weight specified for your vehicle, optional UV dye for trace leaks, and a vent-temperature confirmation test (we want to see 4-7 °C at the centre vent).

Probably yes. Refrigerant leaks slowly even from a perfectly healthy aircon system — typically 10-15% per year through seals and o-rings. After 2-3 years almost every car is running on partial gas, which makes the compressor work harder and shortens its life. If your aircon is even slightly less cold than it was, a regas is the cheapest fix.

Putting gas into a leaking system is a waste of money — it will be out again within weeks. During the vacuum test we can detect leaks. If the system loses vacuum we will stop, tell you, and recommend the next step. Many small leaks can be sealed; bigger ones (a corroded condenser or a leaking compressor seal) need a part replacement before regassing.

Yes. Most hybrid and electric vehicles use R1234yf refrigerant and many use an electric compressor (which requires POE oil, not standard PAG oil — using the wrong oil destroys the compressor). We use the correct refrigerant and oil for your specific make and model.

Yes — for most vehicles we can come to your home, office or workplace anywhere in Johannesburg, Sandton, Randburg, Roodepoort, Midrand, Centurion or Pretoria South. We bring the recovery machine, vacuum pump and refrigerant in our mobile unit. A power point is helpful but not always essential.

As a rule of thumb: every 2-3 years for normal use, or sooner if you notice cooling getting weaker. Older cars (10+ years) and cars that sit unused for long periods tend to lose gas faster as the seals dry out. A regas every 2-3 years is far cheaper than replacing a compressor that has been running low on gas.
